Jill’s Book Club
Jill Johnson is a lifelong reader. She founded the Book Club at the world-renowned Minneapolis Club. For more than 16 years, Jill led discussions with the Club’s prestigious members of nearly 200 non-fiction books. For participants, it was a Master’s Class every month. Book Club participants are highly accomplished individuals. They include Fortune 500 CEOs and board members, major philanthropists, community leaders and even a United States Congressman. The Minneapolis Club is a Platinum Club. This designation places it among the most highly regarded private clubs in the United States.
The non-fiction books Jill reads reflect a wide range of topics. These topics include current events, international relations, historical leaders and world changing events. In addition, the topics also include politics, medicine and business issues. These books take the reader all around the world. They represent both sides of the political aisle and all different periods of history. Books are chosen for their timeliness and topic importance. Moreover, they are chosen because they challenge readers to think.
Why Jill believes reading is so important for today’s business leaders:
“As a management consultant, I am often brought into complex business situations. During these times, the enterprise survival may be in jeopardy, along with the careers of key executives and owners. Reading and studying non-fiction books provide insights. because they share how history-making individuals successfully deal with a major crisis. They reveal how leaders make a difference during challenging situations. Their stories provide me with deep insight on how to bring those qualities forward when working with clients that are in significant distress or need to adapt to address changing market forces. They also provide insight on how teams can come together to increase the likelihood of their collective survival despite the magnitude of the challenge.
Reading offers a framework on how to move leaders and teams in times of great difficulty. This enables them to move beyond denial to a realistic addressing of the issues that must be faced regardless of the pressures this creates. By reading non-fiction books that fall outside the business genre, I gain more knowledge. I learn to weave complex threads together that bring an intellectual stimulation that is unique and challenges me to think outside my normal business world. As a result, I am a better service provider. I develop a deeper understanding of how to find opportunities to leverage a highly stressful situation to lead an enterprise to survive or achieve their goal. I am also a better leader in stressful situations myself because I have relevant role models that serve as my guides. Consequently, they help me keep a proper perspective on the situation.”
